"Usa Nanakura – Seven Breweries" Leaflet

As part of the 2024 Fukuoka–Oita Destination Campaign, a large-scale tourism campaign jointly organised by Oita Prefecture and the JR Group, I was responsible for the editorial direction as well as writing the body text and copy for a leaflet included with a special tasting set. The set was produced by a collective of seven sake breweries in Usa City, a region widely known for its sake production.

Together with the designer, Toyokazu Ono, and the photographer, Tomohide Tani, we visited each brewery to gain a deeper understanding of their practices. Although all the sake is produced within the same region, each brewery has its own philosophy, production methods, and distinct flavour profile, which I sought to convey through the text.

The leaflet also highlights the rich context surrounding sake brewing in Usa: rice cultivated in one of the prefecture’s leading agricultural areas, abundant water resources, a history of offerings to Usa Jingu Shrine, and the cultural background of a coastal town shaped by fishing communities. Drawing on these elements, I carefully shaped the copy to articulate the character of sake brewing in Usa, rooted in the interplay between nature and everyday life.
